You should be able find an after-market loader that would fit. Check out Great Bend, Hardy, Woods, Bush Hog, Allied, Koyker,... Most of these have web sites and should be happy to answer any specific application questions.

Kevin, the Mahindra compact line of tractors is manufactured in South Korea, I believe by the same company that makes the Long compacts. They are not Chinese. I've seen them and they look like a good machine; good fit and finish, metal parts not plastic, standard live pto and hydraulics, remote hydraulics...items considered options on many domestic brands.

Carlton, your friend is comparing apples to oranges. There is a big difference between a compact tractor and a full size tractor, even if the horsepower is equal. If you compare today's 40hp compact against today's 40hp full size tractor, you'll find that the compact is half the weight and physical size. Your old Deere, although small, was a full size tractor, not a compact, with a full size weight. If you have the storage to accommodate a full size 35-40hp tractor and the acreage to justify it (20+ acres), you'd probably be better off going that route. There are still some manufacturers who make full size machines around 40hp, or you might find a good used unit. For loader work, you'll definately want power steering; 4wd would be nice too.

Robert, Jerri's right about the Northern tractor. I was confusing it with another mail order tractor from Eastern Farm Machinery called a Branson, which, unless my brain has skipped a groove again, is almost the same machine as one offered thru AmJawa (Zetor) called Century. Regardless, I agree with you about the prices of the "American" compacts. If there was an Iron Horse or Task Master dealer near me, I'd pull the trigger on one of their models. As far as domestic brands go, don't forget about Massey-Ferguson. Everything I've read about them is good, including a more reasonable price when compared to green, blue, or orange.

John, I've been reading a number of ag forums for a while now, and any time this question comes up, the answer is: Chinese tractors don't have that good a reputation in either reliability or service.
However, I'm not certain how much of this is fact, and how much is simply anti-Chinese product paranoia. Yes, the Chinese may be using 20-30 year old manufacturing techniques, but did we not produce, not just adequate, but great machinery using those same principles? Also, it wasn't that long ago that we held the same sentiment about Japanese products, and now they're considered the world standard (go figure)!
I think two more important questions with regard to these tractors are the particular factory in which they were made, and to who's specs they were built. Some of them are actually made to American dictated specs using readily available replacement parts - i.e. GM alternator, VW oil filter.. When it comes down to it, aren't all compact tractors for the West made elsewhere (Japan or Korea) to American specs?
If you're looking for an inexpensive, but well built compact tractor, and you don't mind one that doesn't have all the lights, bells, whistles, and computers that the red, green, blue, or orange ones do, check out either: Task Master (http://www.taskmaster.net) or Iron Horse (http://www.ironhorsetractor.com)
These are both made in China to American specs - i.e. 3 cylinder diesel, live pto, power steering, ROPS, cat I 3pt hitch, two stage clutch, 12 speed tranny. I saw the Iron Horse in person at my state spring equipment show, and it looks like a beast! Solid built components, good fit and finish (a couple of rough castings, but hey, take a close look at a 15 year old "American" made unit), and no oil leaks!

I know of one individual who purchased skids for a pickup truck plow, and welded the mounting brackets to the backside of his 3pt blade. You might look into this.

Kim,<br>I checked out Tructor probably six months ago. After reviewing the literature and pricing info they were kind enough to send, I decided that yes, it's an interesting concept, but no thanks. Two negatives that occurred to me: (1) Very pricy when compared to a compact tractor; and (2) Almost no visibility of rear implements, mounted or drawn (one photo in their brochure actually shows the driver leaning out the side of the cab to get a look at a mower). If unusual, compact, and dual (front and rear) 3pt/pto are on your required list, check out the 4wd, articulated-steering, compact tractors from either Antonio Carraro (www.antoniocarraro.it/home_e.htm) or Goldoni (www.goldoni.com/glodo_uk.htm). I believe, if memory serves, that Carraro offers a couple models with reversible drivers station.

Bruce,<br> Agco, for some unknown reason, doesn't feel it necessary to convey specific info about their many brands' models at their web site. So before all those individuals who only see a specific color get ahold of you, do yourself a favor and go check a Massey out in person. That's what I did. In my opinion, they are every bit as good a tractor as the orange, green, and blue ones( and I was raised on Ford). On most models, mid PTO is standard (an option on some other tractors), engine size is larger and rpm slower than other comparable HP models. Cost, in my area, is similar to other major name brands (my personal feeling is they all get together and agree on a price for each HP class). I have heard and read good things about their performance and reliability, too. The same can also be said about Kubota, Deere, and NH as well. I haven't pulled the trigger yet (having trouble convincing the wife), but if I did, I'd go for the MF1240. Bottom line: Get what you want; any of these tractors should make you happy.

I've never personally used one, but I do know the TC5 is the local rental company's unit of choice. Another couple of possibilities you should ceck out are: Dig-it (www.yazookees.com); and Speedex (www.speedex.com). The Dig-it models appear to be the similar to Terramite, but Speedex offers a 4wd model and quick-tach loader/backhoe to easily convert to rear 3pt hitch.

You forgot to compare hydraulic systems. I'm not sure about the JD and Kubota, but I know that the Honda's is far too small (approx 4gpm total). Also, mower and loader compatability on the Honda is not possible.

Rhino is still in business. I sent an e-mail to Rhino Internaional recently inquiring about their pending collapse and was informed that a new distributor is already in place. That doesn't mean that we should all run right out and buy one...depends on one's expectations for a tractor, I guess.
